Pristine beaches of natural paradise

Sao Tome and Principe
From 1450 eur

An unspoiled paradise in the Gulf of Guinea to yourself. What does São Tomé look like? Crystal clear water, prisitine sand, gigantic volcanoes and fresh coffee straight from the plantation. And it's worth adding that you're likely to be the only Europeans around most of the time. Sounds like a plan for an escape from civilisation? Let’s hit the road!

São Tomé is a country few have heard of. But that's fine, because the pristine beaches will be all yours! It is also one of the last natural sanctuaries on the equator. The country (São Tomé and Príncipe) is also next to Tuvalu and Kiribati –- one of the three least-visited countries in the world, with only a few thousand tourists coming  each year.

When you get bored with playing Robinson Crusoe on one of the beaches, more attractions await you. Explore the lush jungle of the island’s interior with its unique wildlife, admire the perfect azure of the sky and the countless shades of the turquoise water. This is not even half of the attractions though apart from lazing around on the beach, you can always visit a cocoa or coffee plantation, see Portuguese colonial architecture or learn more about Creole culture. There's no way to get bored in São Tomé!

Travel plan

Visiting Lisbon

Impreza Zabytki

Flight to Lisbon, the former colonial metropolis of São Tomé. You spend a night in a classy hotel close to the airport, city centre and subway station. We suggest an evening walk along the coast – this is exactly where the Portuguese set out 300 years ago to conquer São Tomé. Enjoy dinner while listening to fado music in one of Lisbon's excellent restaurants. Get ready for your dream holiday in paradise while still enjoying the charms of Portugal.

Departure to Sao Tome

Today you leave Lisbon for São Tomé. The flight is only 6-hours, but on arrival, you might get the impression that you've just travelled 60 hundred years back in time! The weekly flight to and from Portugal is a window onto the outside world for the people living on the islands say boa viajem to the São Toman ministers who are very likely to be with you on the plane.

After arrival you move straight to the tiny Ilheu das Rolas, a true paradise island situated just 60 kilometres from the airport. There are no roads or cars here, instead you'll hear birds’ song everywhere.

Now comes the best part! You're probably wondering where you'll be staying on this dream island? It is time to reveal the secret –- your new house is a luxurious bungalow surrounded by deserted pristine beaches, with a jacuzzi only for you. What else is there to do but just switch off your phone, hide your laptops and tablets deep in the suitcase, grab a cold drink and your favourite book and leave behind all the problems of every day life?

Ilheu das Rolas -– natural heaven

Now you can play at being Robinson Crusoe on a desert island just with a little bit more luxury. You can do exactly whatever you feel like - go swimming, diving, fishing in the clear waters of the Gulf of Guinea or watching gigantic whales. You might also want to get a lesson on how to pick coconuts from the local monkeys, or maybe just contemplate the romantic light of the sunset? Keep in mind that the island is located exactly on the Equator,– this means you can stand on the northern hemisphere with one foot and on the southern with the other!

Today you'll make your way to the capital city, where you spend the night in a historic hotel situated within tropical gardens. Get to know the slow pace of life in the city of São Tomé, the largest town on the island. Mingle with the locals and let them recommend you the best beer or prawns that can be found in one of the bars in the harbour, under the crumbling arches of former coffee plantators’ mansions. And most of all – if by any chance you still have not been told already - leve leve, take it easy!

If you're eager to see more, we recommend a visit to a cocoa or coffee plantation. You'll get to see bubling volcanoes and, obviously, taste freshly roasted coffee. If you are more of a leve leve fan, it's also nice to keep working on your tan next to the hotel pool and munch on the abundent delicious tropical fruit.

Back to Lisbon

Are you sure you did not pick any forbidden fruit? It seems so, as you are being banished from the Eden-like land.

In the evening you fly to Lisbon.

Back home

Arrival in Lisbon, quick Portuguese breakfast in the airport terminal and you return home.

The above travel plan is just an example of what you might expect when travelling with Planet Escape. We tailor each travel plan to individual client’s needs and we carefully select the right beach, accommodation, activities and the length of stay to suit your individual requirements.

Ilheu das Rolas

The 4-star bungalow complex you will be staying at is the only option for accommodation on the island and, as many say, the best hotel in the whole Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe. Guests live in bungalows surrounded by a palm tree grove and have a swimming pool, restaurant and a bar at their disposal. However, the biggest advantage of the hotel is obviously its location in the heart of one of the last nature sanctuaries in the world. Kilometres of heartbreakingly beautiful beaches fringed with lush greenery will be all yours.

The capital of Sao Tome

The best hotel in town, where the colonial design, swimming pool, tropical gardens and comfy rooms will help you wind down after exploring the island.

São Tomé might not be a dream destination for those fond of exclusive cuisine and Michelin-star restaurants. The staple products for cooking are those obtained on the islands – primarily fish and seafood of a freshness and delicacy that can only be dreamed of in most parts of Europe. Of great importance is cassava, used to produce all kinds of delicacies – from flour used to bake crunchy bread to a special kind of alcohol. The seeds of the manioc are processed to obtain oil and the plant itself is also consumed as a side vegetable. When speaking about the natural reserves of the islands, we cannot also omit the wealth of colourful and aromatic fruit of different kinds. However, the best thing about Sao Toman cuisine is the fact that there is hardly any processed food on the island –- everything is fresh and healthy, as it comes from the seasonal harvest and daily catch. Enjoy!
